Anoop Jalota enthralls audience at the Consulate on February 23, 2009

The Consulate General of India New York hosted a musical performance of Bhajans, Ghazals and Geet by renowned artist Shri Anoop Jalota on February 23, 2009. This event was the first under the “Jewels of India” series featuring concerts, dance performances and various other events showcasing the rich and diverse culture of India.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Prabhu Dayal stated that though Shri Jalota is known worldwide as “Bhajan Samrat”, his big repertoire also includes Ghazals and Geets. Shri Jalota has performed 4000 live concerts all over the world. He has recorded over 1200 Bhajans, gazals and other songs and released 150 albums of his music.

Mr. Dayal fondly recalled memories of his long friendship with Shri Jalota. He remembered the times when he had called upon the famous singer for events related to a good cause and Shri Jalota had always obliged. Consul General Dayal told the audience that Shri Jalota was not charging any performance fee and had requested that the concert be dedicated to Pratham, a leading non-profit organization working towards providing and improving primary education in India. Mr. Dayal reminded the guests that by dedicating this event to Pratham, we would be able to support its efforts towards helping under-privileged children in India. We would also be able to promote culture while also supporting a good cause.

Bouquets to the artists were presented by Mrs. Chandni Dayal. Mr. Arvind Sanger, Member of Pratham’s Advisory Board, also addressed the guests and gave them a brief outline of Pratham’s programs and initiatives in India. Since 1994, when Pratham first began working in the slums of Mumbai, their programs have helped more than 5 million children across 50 cities and 2000 villages. Their programs include pre-school, remedial learning and libraries as well as a catalytic program called ‘Read India’ which works in collaboration with State Governments and communities. A short video on Pratham was also shown during the event.

Shri Jalota began his spellbinding performance with his super hit bhajan “Aisi laagi lagan, Meera ho gai magan”. His judicious selection included devotional renditions, ghazals and geets. He addressed and entertained the gathering in between his delightful musical scores. His magnetic personality and evocative music enthralled every one present.

At the end of the evening Shri Jalota auctioned his harmonium to the highest bidder, the proceeds of which also went to Pratham. It was an outstanding musical event for a wonderful cause and the first of its kind at the Consulate General of India, New York.

The concert was well attended. Acclaimed singer Sharda was among the distinguished personalities present on the occasion.
