JEWELS OF INDIA SERIES - AN EVENING OF CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

As part of the "Jewels of India Series", the Consulate General of India, New York in association with Mrs. Ranju and Mr. Ravi Batra, organized a function of Indian classical instrumental music on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the New India House.  The concert was graced by the music lovers of the tri-state area.

Consul General of India, Amb. Prabhu Dayal welcomed the artists stating that their versatility in the instrumental music has made them not only popular in India, but in many other countries notably in Europe and America.

Pt Kushal Das and Pt Kumar Bose belong to West Bengal and underwent intensive and rigorous training early in their lives from eminent gurus in Sitar and Tabla respectively.  Both the musicians belonged to Senia Miahar Gharana to which eminent musicians like Pt Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan hailed from.  The event began with 'Raag Yaman', an evening Raga, followed by 'Raag Mishra Khama'.

Pt Kushal Das on Sitar and Pt Kumar Bose on Tabla, enthralled the audience with stimulating classical music compelling the audience to a continuous applause during the event.  Both the musicians engaged themselves with very clear and discernible conversations through music and received standing ovation from the appreciative audience.

The evening concluded with a dinner reception.
